Chimombe appeal for bail dismissed
Mike Chimombe's appeal for bail was dismissed by the Supreme Court on March 6, 2025, upholding the High Court's decision.
Chimombe will remain in detention while his case is being tried.
Chimombe had argued that the High Court erred in relying on the magistrate's earlier findings instead of considering his bail application with a fresh perspective.
However, the Supreme Court found that the State had established compelling reasons for Chimombe's continued detention, including the likelihood of absconding, the seriousness of the charges, and the risk of interfering with witnesses .
Chimombe's troubles began in 2024 when he and his coworker, Moses Mpofu, were arrested for allegedly misusing funds and theft related to the Presidential Goats Pass-on Scheme.
He was initially denied bail by the Magistrate's Court in July 2024, and subsequent bail applications to the High Court in January 2025 were also denied .
